This image depicts the artwork "This is Not Consent" by Charlotte Abramow, inspired by the controversial rape case in Ireland. The piece, printed on soft PhotoRag paper, features a delicate apricot-colored background that contrasts subtly with the central image of a lace panty, which is symbolic of the victim-blaming controversy that surrounded the case.

Charlotte Abramow’s This is Not Consent is an image that carries a massive weight behind it. The picture is a direct reaction to the controversial rape case that took place in Ireland back in 2018. In 2018, a 17-year-old Irish girl was raped by a 27-year-old man. During the trial, the defendant’s team used a pair of lace panties that the victim was wearing as evidence of implied consent. To the whole world’s shock, the defendant was found innocent and walked. The blatant victim-blaming that took place during the trial caused an uproar around the world, and many women started uploading pictures of their underwear using the hashtag #thisisnotconsent.

This is Not Consent is Abramow’s response to the unethical victim-blaming that women all around the world are subjected to. With this picture, Charlotte Abramow manages to perfectly encapsulate the outrage and disappointment that this historical ruling caused in women all around the world.
